Accentuate Your Beauty With Chikankari Attire

 

Embroidery market in India is on the swing. There are numerous patterns and designs which embellish the Indian embroidery market. The Chikankari or Chikankari embroidery originate from Lukhnow, Uttar Pradesh and expands its world wide presence. Mainly it is popular in cities like Delhi, Agra, Rampur, Banaras, Patna and Gaya. It is a skill more than 200 years old. It is a gracefully and skillfully done hand embroidery on variety of fabric like silk, chiffon, organza, net etc.
 
The Chikankari embroidery has got variety of designs which are done carefully to meet the latest fashion demands. Light Chikan sari, salwar suits, kurtas are the most demanded stuff. It is typically designed with white threads. It is an intricate and delicate needle work that suited to hot climatic condition. The patterns consist of 40 stitches of which 30 are commonly used. These can be categorized into three heads-flat, raised and open trellis (jaali work). Jaali work generally done with wide blunt needle. The Chikankari embroidery differs fabric to fabric and different stitches are used accordingly. Tapichi (stem stitch), bukhara (inverted stem stitch) are some most used stitches.
 
Originally is was done on white tanjeb; the muslin from Dacca. Now days designers use various fabrics like silk, organza etc. When a designer conceptualized a design, various motifs are prepared and its placements are completed. As soon as design is ready it is engraved on a wooden blocks or brass blocks using fugitive colors. Then entire pattern is engraved into printed fabric. Craftsmen use variety of stitches to enhance the design and pattern. Careful attention and patience make the process smooth. Some of the popular motifs are:
 
  • Kairi (mango motif – taipchi stitch is used)
  • Dhaniya Patti
  • Dhum Patti (leaf pattern made of cross-stitch)
  • Ghas Patti (V-shaped line of stitches)
  • Murri (grain motif)
  • Kangan (combination of ofkeel, murri andjali stitch)
  • Joda Murri (pari of grains)
  • Maharaki (done around the button hole with murri)
  • Sadi-maharaki (tapichi and murri is used)
  • Daraz / Katub (two fabrics are overlapped and stitched)
  • Pechani (taipchi stitch is used to give a effect of lever spring)
  • Tanjire (chain like design)
  • Gitti (circular design)
  • Kangira (to give triangles effect on the wrong side of the fabric)
