This variation of chain stitch gives a textured appearance. The stitch can be used with a large variety of threads to give different textures. The stitch can be worked with long spikes. This stitch is amongst the top preferences for hand embroidery, from the chain stitch family and it is most suitable for linear details. Ribbon embroidery can also be done with this stitch. It can be worked like a detached chain stitch to create floral motifs.
Twisted chain stitch starts ordinarily like chain stitch, but here the needle is not inserted back to the place from where it has originated. Needle is inserted close to the initial loop. It is important for the loops to be worked together closely. Twisted stitches give a slightly textured effect on the fabric just like the chain stitch. Twisted stitches knitting is also popular and is widely used. Twisted chain stitch designs look fabulous on shawls, hats, baby items etc. Unlimited variety of embroidery patterns can be created using this stitch.
To work on twisted stitch, bring the needle up through the fabric and hold the thread with the left thumb. Insert the needle to the left of its emerging point that can be varied depending upon the width of the spike. Take the needle through the fabric bringing the point of the needle out a short space along the line to be stitched. Cross the thread over the needle and wrap it under the needle point and pull the needle.
