Straight stitch is also called single satin stitch or running stitch. These are single stitches of varying or uniform lengths originating at same or different locations. They may be grouped to form twigs, grass or other landscape details. Only care to be taken is that they should not be too long. This is done simply without crossing or looping the thread. It is the basic and most easiest stitch of all. Large pieces of canvas project this embroidery straight stitch well.
Types of straight stitches

Back stitch
Straight stitches are worked either vertically or horizontally on canvas. They look great when worked on single canvas. This type of stitch passes through the fabric in a simple up and down motion, in which the needle is brought through the fabric at one end and returned from the wrong side at the opposite end of the stitch. The thread has to be pulled carefully, so that it shouldn't distort the work.
Straight stitch embroidery is also very easy to work, but it should be noted that the stitches should not be too long or too loose. The tighter the stitch, the more stable the connection of the fabric will be. It is often used to exemplify grass and other landscape details. Textures can be built up of layers of single stitches and areas of a design can be shaded or blended using one or more colors of a similar shade.
