Running stitch is the most basic and simplest stitch. All other forms of stitching have evolved from this style of stitching. It can be best defined as the beginners stitch. It is also called the quilting stitch because, it is used to create wonderful quilt patterns in Indian Kantha embroidery and also in patchwork. This stitch is used for doing basic seams in hand sewing or tailoring. Padded satin stitch has loose rows of running stitches that are shorter in length.
To work this stitch one just has to move the needle over and under the fabric at regular spaces along the embroidery line. However, the length may vary and mostly top of the fabric has more visible thread than the below side. Neatness comes with the regularity in the stitch size over and beneath the cloth. It is extremely easy to learn and more easy to master.
This type of stitch is quick, and a straight line can be easily maintained if it is done with complete concentration. Running stitch is very simple so it is most commonly used for repairing clothes or joining fabrics. It is ideal for hemming and top stitching also. Just a single piece of thread is needed to complete this stitch and the fabric is kept smooth. This stitch is taught at the initial stage of learning embroidery because it is a decorative embroidery stitch. Different types of running stitch include:-
-
Looped stitch
-
Laced stitch
-
Inter laced stitch
-
Whipped stitch
-
Parallel stitch
-
Stepped stitch
