Open Chain Stitch

Open chain stitch has few other names such as square chain stitch, ladder stitch and Roman chain stitch. It is another variant of chain stitch because it is stitched in a similar way. This stitch is worked by making the adjustment between the spacing of the stitches in an open or closed manner. Any variant of thread can be used, but thread should be selected carefully, because the weight of the thread will determine the size of the needle.

 

In the first step of this stitch, needle is brought through the fabric from the left hand side and the thread is held there only. Then the needle is inserted from right side and brought out from the left line which has to be stitched. Pull the thread through the fabric which should be wrapped beneath the needle. In the next step, needle is to be inserted in the loop on the right side and the needle is to be brought through from left side.

 

The appearance of open chain stitch is like a ladder and one can creatively stitch embellishments between the spaces of this stitch. Beautiful embroidery designs can be created with this stitch. Variety of elaborated patterns can be designed on apparels or home decor items. The stitch supports mirrors quite well. To add a decorative effect, beads can be added. Different threads or ribbons can be used to give different effect
