Long and short stitches are in the form of an outline which that are alternatively worked. It is another name for tipping stitch. This stitch is practically painting with the needle. It is a filler stitch that fills the motif, flowers etc with the colored embroidery thread. It is a simple modification of satin stitch where the length of the stitches are at two levels.
It is used when the space to be filled is too big to be covered with satin stitch. It is also used to give a shaded effect. In the first row the stitches are alternately long and short and follow the outline of the shape. The stitches in the following rows are worked in the same manner but to give a smooth appearance. They are perfect to give a shaded effect to any fabric. This stitch is the oldest and important stitch of all which should be mastered, as it is the foundation of solid embroidery.
This stitching style is perfect to give an contemporary look to any fabric. Smooth and continuous looks can be created with this stitch which are elegant in appearance. Although,this stitch is indeed hard for a beginner to learn but once you start practicing, it can be effectively put on the fabric. Different tones can be shaded effectively,which makes it most common for thread painting.
