French Knot has some other names such as French dot, knotted stitch, twisted knot stitch and wound stitch. This is a little tricky stitch but one can master it with a lot of practice. It gives excellent effect in flowers and as filler stitches. It is more easy to work this stitch with a straw or chenille needle and stretching the fabric in an embroidery hoop. The finishing of the stitch is often determined by the size of the thread chosen.
To work the stitch, thread is brought through the fabric and needle is twisted round the thread twice. However, no. of twists can vary from two to three but if you are using a thinner thread, and you want a larger knot, then three twists are recommended. In the next step, needle is to be brought back to the position of the fabric where it emerged from. Here, the needle is to be inserted again and pulled through to complete the knot. The coiled thread will set into a knot. It hard for a beginner to work this stitch correctly, so many people avoid it. But if one starts working correctly, it can be fun and easy to complete this stitch.
French knots give fabulous embroidery results that are highly admired by all. Various lines and shapes and polka dot like embroidery patterns can be embroidered with this stitch. Many craftsmen give this stitch the credit of being the basic element of embroidery. French knot stitch can be troublesome initially but the designs are simply pretty and perfect for decorating cross stitch designs.
