Double cross stitches can be best defined as traditional stitches in which horizontal threads are laid over the vertical threads. These two threads are firstly stitched on top of the first stitch. You can imagine them as an X shape or a '+' sign. The result of this stitch is generally in the shape of a star. When this stitch is worked with a metallic thread, ideal stitches of stars or snowflake can be created.
Basic requirements while working this stitch
- Tapestry needle
- Embroidery floss
- Aida fabric
- Scissors
A light weight embroidery floss should always be chosen while working on Aida fabric so that the double cross stitch doesn't appear thick. Choose the center of the fabric to begin working with your tapestry needle. Stitch a simple tight cross stitch design so that the embroidery floss is secured behind the fabric. In the next step, a horizontal half stitch is stitched over the cross stitch, followed by a vertical half stitch from right to left over the same cross stitch.
The same pattern of stitches is to be continued in a row. When stitching work is complete, thread can be cut and secured behind the fabric. This stitch can be worked on canvas or as a filling stitch on linen. It is more often used as a count stitch. In simple words, this stitch involves one vertical cross and one diagonal. The stitch can also be modified a bit. Two horizontal stitches are crossed with two vertical stitches. Then with two diagonal stitches are crossed in the same way.
