Cutwork embroidery is created by cutting away and discarding the portions of the background fabric whose edges are worked in buttonhole stitches. It is a representation of beautiful needlework. Though this form of embroidery can be done in different styles, but the simplest form doing embroidery cutwork is by working in small open areas without any connecting bars.
Different types of cutwork embroidery are:

Renaissance embroidery: In this type of cutwork, buttonhole bars work as a medium to connect to connect the edges. These buttonhole bars are stitched in the same width with a single thread.

Richelieu embroidery: The only difference between these embroidery and other embroidery is that the buttonhole bars may be decorated with picots and sometimes rings.

Venetian embroidery: It can be called as another name for thickly embroidered buttonhole stitching. Huge amount of lace stitches and surface embroidery is included for making cutwork designs.

Reticella,or Italian cutwork: It is the most elaborated form of cutwork embroidery. There is a very slight difference between this and needle made lace.
Initially cutwork patterns were created on linen fabric and later the threads were removed to make the fabric appear lighter. It can also be worked on cotton and lawn fabric. It results in outstanding patterns of lace cutwork. Cutwork machine embroidery is also popular. Machine embroidery cutwork designs result in creation of lace comparatively faster but it is fun to create lace with hands. Running and buttonhole stitches are the two common stitches that are used for creating cutwork embroidery designs.
