Cup stitch is basically worked to raise the surface of the stitch. It is a three dimensional embroidery. To work this stitch, simple design is created using straight stitch. This embroidery design is the foundation stitch, upon which two twisted buttonhole stitches are to be worked. The surface of the stitch can be built higher by continuing to stitch between the spaces of the previous stitch. Stitching is to be continued until the desired height is achieved.
An extra stitch can be added at some space to open the structure whereas alternate stitches are to be stitched to close the structure. Here various stages of cup stitch are collected by creating different textures. Neutral color threads of various thickness and texture can chosen to give an contrasting effect to the fabric. The stitch forms the shape of a circular cup, hence it is named cup stitch. Underwater structures representing rocks, weeds and plants can also be created by working this stitch.
Flower like shapes can be easily created using this stitch. It is an easy stitch which gives marvelous effects. Different color threads can be used to give a multi colored effect. Beads can also be added in the middle of the stitch to add grace to the embroidery pattern. Bead work looks extremely beautiful on cup stitch, especially on flower patterns. It is a raised stitch and is used to give three dimensional effect to the patterns.
