Coral knot, German knot stitch, knotted stitch, beaded stitch, and snail trail are other names of coral stitch. This is an ancient embroidery stitch of 17th and 18th century, in which a line is created in the form of a row of knots. It follows curved details well, along with the outlines. It results in the creation of beautiful twiggy bits, while working a floral design. It can also be worked as a knotted filling stitch which is used for filling the entire embroidery pattern with knots.
This stitch is worked by bringing out the thread from the end of the right side of the line. It is always stitched from right to left. Thread is held tightly with the left thumb and laid along shape of the line. A small stitch is stitched below the line and thread. Keeping the thread below the needle, the thread is pulled through. It is an outline stitch and is used in vines and creepers. The stitch may loose its effect when pulled through tightly.
Altering the spacing of knots and needle angle can result in varied coral stitch designs. The weight and twists of the thread determine the finishing of the design. Beautiful dresses can be created using coral knitting technique. Coral stitch patterns are a representation of elegance. Contrasting color threads can be used to give a unique effect to the whole design. Sea fish, sea plants or under water scenes can be conveniently created using coral embroidery.
