Chain stitch is a popular stitch in sewing and embroidery which is formed by a series of looped stitches. It can be used decoratively and constructively. Also known as tambour stitch and point de chainette, there are several variations of chain stitch. All other stitches are based on this stitch, because it is the oldest stitch. It has originated from Persia and India. Here, it is worked with the help of a fine hook known as 'ari'. This tool is known as 'tambour' hook in west which looks similar to a crochet hook. Tambour embroidery is the result of needlework done by using tambour hook.
How to stitch a chain stitch
This stitch is very simple to work. It is worked by bringing the thread to the top of the line and then holding it tightly with the left thumb. The needle is to be inserted back to where it emerged from. A short distance should always be maintained while bringing the point out. Working thread is kept below the needle point and pulled through slowly. Chain stitch done with needle is different from the one done with hook. Needlework displays separate stitches whereas hook has continuous stitches with no joins.
