Kajal is a hindi word which means collyrium. This variety is known as "Lakshmi Kajal" since the grains of this variety are black in colour like collyrium.

The grain is dark red in the flowering stage and and it becomes black in the milky stage and on maturity.

The rice is brown and coarse. It is ideal for making idly and dosa.
